Part of our responsibility as parents is to keep our kids happy and healthy. Having sick children is literally the worst, heartbreaking for parents to see and confusing for kids to understand why they feel this way. The best part of my days is watching my kids play and laugh together. Luckily there are things we, as parents, can do to help keep our kids healthy just by establishing a few family health habits.
6 Ways to Keep Your Kids Healthy
Limit Sugar
There are several different reasons why children should avoid, or at the very least, limit sugar intake. Sugar is know to suppress the immune system and as children their bodies are still trying to build this up. Sugar can interfere with the body’s absorption of nutrients as well. Physically it can weaken eyesight and reduce the growth hormone. Opt for natural sugars found in fresh fruits and vegetables.
Increase Water Intake
Water is one of the most important liquids a child can consume. It is recommended that children drink 8 oz per age. For example, my three year old would consume 24 oz of water a day while my 1 year old would drink just 8 oz. It’s important to note that consuming too much water can be detrimental as well.
Encourage a Kids Healthy Diet
Eating balanced meals that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats can help keep kids healthy (and happy!). While I do understand it can be extremely difficult to get toddlers to consume vegetables, there are different ways to incorporate them into their diet. Offer dips like hummus for carrot sticks, blend fruits and veggies into a smoothie, or add pureed vegetables to pasta & cheese sauces like this Macaroni & Cheese recipe.
Take a Multivitamin
Offering a multivitamin is a great way to supplement other vitamins your kids may not get enough of. Unfortunately there are so many vitamins on the market with added ingredients that are extremely unnecessary. That’s why I was so happy to find Smarty Pants vitamins. It’s a gummy vitamin without all the extras and it tastes like fruit snacks so your kids won’t fight you on taking it! If you don’t believe it, check out the short video clip below of my oldest eating her nightly vitamins. (See our favorite health supplements on our Amazon Shop page.)
“Every bottle includes three delicious flavors with no synthetic colors, no artificial flavors, sweeteners, or preservatives, or any other junk.” – Smarty Pants
Take a look at the label.
Often you’ll turn over a product to read the label and find things like corn syrup and words you can’t even pronounce. Not with Smarty Pants though. Now the whole family enjoys gummy vitamins with the Men’s Complete and Women’s Complete vitamins. Shop the products on Amazon.

Get Enough Sleep
Getting enough sleep is huge for little ones. Developing a calm nap and bedtime routine will help ensure your child gets the proper amount of sleep. It is recommended that children get between 10-13 hours of sleep per day, depending on age. Sleep allows the body to recover and fight off any brewing infections or illnesses.
Encourage More Outdoor Activities
Most kids really enjoy being outside and it can get frustrating being trapped inside for too long. Bonus! Being outside and in the sunshine gives your little ones a boost of necessary Vitamin D! Vitamin D helps to boost the immune system and prevent a variety of illnesses. Just be sure to apply sunscreen to avoid burns. Encourage your kids to run around, play a game of tag, or take a walk/bike ride around the neighborhood.
There are so many ways we can keep our kids happy and healthy. These are just a few. What steps do you take to keep your kids free of sniffles and illnesses?
